Patients with inherited retinal diseases have traditionally received a clinical diagnosis which only provided a rough guide to the cause of their vision loss. Genetic testing is now standard of care for patients with IRD. A genetic diagnosis can guide treatment decisions and determine eligibility for gene-based therapies, clinical trials, registers and natural history studies.

This learning module provides an introduction to IRD before discussing the genetic diagnosis of IRDs and management of patients with IRD after a genetic diagnosis. The additional clinical audit will ask healthcare providers to reflect on the rates of genetic diagnosis among their own patients diagnosed with an IRD.

This activity will ensure healthcare providers practice are aligned with current standard of care and encourage them to offer a genetic diagnosis to any of their IRD patients who have not received one.
