Training Post Accreditation
Effective accreditation of Australia’s specialist medical training sites supports quality and safe patient care. RANZCO is accredited by the AMC and the MCNZ as a specialist medical College and is in turn responsible for the accreditation of Training Posts and training sites across Australia and New Zealand.
Accreditation ensures consistency, making certain that the education and training experience remains uniformly excellent across all accredited Training Posts. Accredited Training Posts provide supervised training, hands-on experience, and assessments covering all aspects of the curriculum leading to the development of a competent ophthalmologist.
The Accreditation Policy
The Accreditation Policy governs the Accreditation of Training Posts by the College in Australia and New Zealand and determines the method of and considerations relevant to the Accreditation of Training Posts.
Standards for Ophthalmology Training Posts
All Training Posts are accredited according to the standards and criteria outlined in the Standards for Ophthalmology Training Posts.
The Accreditation Process
All Training Posts must be accredited prior to hosting a trainee. The Training Post Inspectorate is responsible for accrediting all Training Posts and consists of Fellows who are experts in accreditation and are from the range of geographical locations where RANZCO members practice.
The Training Post Inspectorate Committee reports to the RANZCO Education Committee (REC) and is led by the Chief Inspector who is supported by Senior Inspectors and Post Inspectors. Amongst other things, the Committee:
- Develops the Standards for Ophthalmology Training Posts (the Standards), after consultation with training supervisors, health agencies and hospital administration.
- Inspects existing and proposed Training Posts to determine performance against the Standards and provides them accreditation to host ophthalmology trainees.
- Supports Training Sites/Posts rectify any identified deficiencies.
Reaccreditation of Training Posts
From 2024, RANZCO will be moving to a 5-year accreditation cycle with an increased focus on continual monitoring of training posts.
Updated accreditation schedules are currently being drawn up and will be made available to the training networks and posts in accordance with the RANZCO accreditation policy.
Accreditation decisions are subject to review under the RANZCO Reconsideration, Review & Appeals Policy. For more information, please see the relevant section below.
Interim and temporary accreditation inspections
The College may undertake interim inspections, out of cycle, for the following reasons:
- Where conditions are placed on a training site which must be met within a specified period.
- Where the College is made aware of changes to a training site or post that led to a substantial departure from the standards.
- Where the College receives a complaint from about a training site/post deviating from a Fellow/trainee for not meeting the required standards.
As a result, the College may impose conditions or suspend the accreditation of such training sites/posts until they provide satisfactory evidence of meeting the requirements.
Temporary accreditation may be granted to a Training Post for a specified duration and on specific terms where the College becomes aware of unanticipated demand and/or circumstances that give rise to a need for immediate temporary accreditation.
Please see the RANZCO Planning An Inspection Document for more detailed information.

Monitoring and Departure from Standards
The College has an obligation to monitor the performance of accredited training posts between accreditation inspections and currently this is achieved through regular, voluntary surveys of trainees and supervisors at training sites. In addition, the College reviews the results of the annual Medical Training Survey, conducted by AHPRA, to monitor overall training program performance.
Training Posts are expected to provide the College with written notice of any material change that may be reasonably anticipated to adversely impact the Training Post’s capacity to continue to comply with the Standards.
Should a Fellow, member of the College or member of the public find that a training post is in breach of RANZCOs standards or employs practices that put trainees’ health and safety at risk, they may raise a Training Post Alert (TPA) with the College. A TPA is a serious matter and anyone wishing to raise a TPA must first read section 9 of the RANZCO Accreditation Policy.
Complaints about the training at an accredited training site may be raised by emailing accreditation@ranzcodev.dev.nucleoserver.com, in confidence.
As required by the NHPO report on accreditation of specialist training posts, recently published on 10 November 2023, the training post monitoring mechanisms are currently being revised to ensure that there are adequate processes in place for RANZCO to proactively identify and resolve accreditation related issues in between inspections. The new monitoring mechanisms will be released after consultation with the AMC and other stakeholders.
Reconsideration Review and Appeals
The College aims for fairness and transparency in all its processes, and acknowledges the possibility of grievances, leading to the establishment of the Reconsideration, Review, and Appeals policy and procedures.
If Training Networks/Sites/Posts are dissatisfied with the Accreditation Decision, they may seek a reconsideration of that decision under the Reconsideration, Review, And Appeals Policy
- Applications for reconsideration, review and appeal of a Decision are available by signing in to the Portal on the RANZCO website and clicking on the ‘Applications’ tile on the dashboard.
- Applications must be lodged with the College by email addressed to the CEO care of reassessments@ranzcodev.dev.nucleoserver.com
- Applications for Reconsideration must be within thirty (30) days of the date of the Original Decision
- Applications for Review must be lodged within thirty (30) days of the date of the notification of the Reconsideration Decision.
- Applications for Appeal must be lodged within thirty (30) days of the date of the notification of the Review Decision.
- The cost to lodge an appeal is AUD 5,000 plus GST. Information for all three applications can be found in the Reconsideration, Review And Appeals Policyon RANZCO’s Policy and Guidelines page.
For more information please see the Reconsideration, Review, And Appeals Policy User Guide & FAQ.
