MCNZ Education Committee – Member

Medical Council of New Zealand (Council) is seeking nominations to appoint a RANZCO member to its Education Committee (the Committee).

The Committee is a standing committee of Council that advises and makes recommendations to Council about medical education and training in Aotearoa New Zealand. It also makes decisions on the accreditation status of training providers. The Committee’s terms of reference are on the MCNZ website.

The ideal candidate will:

  • have a strong interest in how medical education and training in Aotearoa New Zealand is provided to medical students and medical trainees, with experience of contributing to the delivery of a medical college’s vocational training programme/programmes
  • be able to participate constructively in discussion with other Committee members regarding education matters including the Council’s role in accrediting medical schools, districts of Te Whatu Ora for prevocational medical training, and medical colleges as vocational training and recertification providers
  • understand Council’s wider role and function as a regulatory body
  • be actively practising and participating in a Council-accredited vocational recertification programme.

The successful applicant will join the Committee in August 2025 for a period of three years. The appointed member must be able to commit to attending quarterly meetings (two via Zoom and two at Council’s offices in Wellington).

The remaining meeting dates for 2025 are 5 June, 14 August, and 20 November. The member should be available to attend their first meeting on 14 August 2025. As a member of Council’s Education Committee, the appointed member is likely to be invited to join several accreditation panels over their term of office.

MCNZ Accreditation Panel – Member

Medical Council NZ are seeking expressions of interest from ophthalmologists with experience in medical education and training to join the pool of potential accreditation panel members. MCNZ are particularly seeking Māori members for this role.

Accreditation panel member 

Council accredits prevocational training providers (Health New Zealand/Te Whatu Ora districts) and Aotearoa New Zealand vocational training and recertification providers. MCNZ standards for prevocational and vocational training providers identify the core criteria that must exist in all accredited training programmes. In partnership with the Australian Medical Council, MCNZ accredits Aotearoa New Zealand medical schools and Australasian medical colleges.

Accreditation panels are responsible for:

  • assessing the training programme and the training provider against the accreditation standards
  • assessing the information provided by the training provider in the self-assessment and through the accreditation site visit
  • preparing a draft report that assesses the programme against the accreditation standards and identifies strengths and areas for improvement.

APAO Council - RANZCO Regional (Australia/New Zealand) Secretary

RANZCO is calling for nominations from Fellows interested in being the RANZCO Regional (Australia/New Zealand) Secretary on the APAO Council.

The Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) works across the region to advance ophthalmology, prevent blindness, facilitate information and knowledge sharing and host regional congresses and conferences. More information is available on the APAO website.

RANZCO requirements

  • Demonstrated experience with APAO, including holding positions on APAO SIGs or events or being a graduate of the APAO Leadership Development Program
  • Evidence of strong relationships and networking, etc. within the APAO
  • Attainment of APAO Achievement Award points and/or awards
  • Demonstrated experience working in the Asia-Pacific through research, education, sustainable development, etc.
  • Ability to act as ambassador for RANZCO and uphold RANZCO’s brand
  • Willingness to advance the RANZCO agenda at the APAO

APAO BYLAW 5: REGIONAL SECRETARY

  • The Regional Secretary of a member organization shall be nominated by the member organization, and elected by the Council to serve on the Council for four years and shall be eligible for re-election provided his/her parent organization has agreed.
  • The Regional Secretary shall be responsible for disseminating information from the Academy to the ophthalmologists and others in his/her organization.
  • S/he shall also be responsible for gathering information from his/her country or region for the Academy.
  • S/he shall be responsible for collecting subscription fees from his/her parent organization to the Academy.
  • Attend the Council meeting that occur at least once in two years at the time and venue of the Congress.

Training Post Inspectorate Committee – Representatives

The Training Post Inspectorate Committee is seeking representatives from the RANZCO membership.

The Training Post Inspectorate Committee is a standing committee of the College, and reports to the RANZCO Education Committee (REC). The Committee meet twice a year (virtually in June/July & face to face at Congress) and is looking to fill two (2) positions on the committee.

Their primary responsibility is to recommend Standards for Ophthalmology Training, inspect and support networks, training posts and potential training posts to determine performance against the Standards.

Each year, there are typically two to three week-long inspection visits conducted across various training sites. As a member of the Inspection team, you will be required to participate in no more than one of these visits per year. These inspections involve a combination of physical and virtual site visits outside your home state and are conducted with a Senior Inspector and a RANZCO staff member. You will also assist with any follow-up activity related to the inspection you attend.

To be considered for this important role, individuals must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Be a Fellow of RANZCO in active practice
  • Experience as a training post supervisor or a clinical tutor in the public hospital system
  • Substantial experience working in a public hospital Department of Ophthalmology
  • Demonstrate experience and commitment to the education and training of RANZCO trainees
  • Know the current requirements of the Vocational Training Program.

Human Research Ethics Committee – Member

RANZCO’s Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) is currently seeking Expressions of Interest for:

  • One (1) member with specialist knowledge in ophthalmology (sub-specialty glaucoma)

The HREC’s broad role is to assess applications involving ophthalmology related human research projects.

The Committee is made up of Ophthalmologists, other professionals and lay people and seeks an additional ophthalmology specialist applicant. The time commitment and responsibilities would include participation at four evening meetings per year (generally 5:30-6:30pm), reading and commenting on eye related research applications involving human research proposals, and regular email correspondence.

The Human Research Ethics Committee is responsible to the Board of The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists as well as the Qualification and Education Committee. All participants of committees of RANZCO are voluntary.

This is an excellent opportunity to make a positive contribution to the vision of Australian and New Zealand communities through the College.

Skill/Area of Specialisation

The committee members that we are seeking requires specialist knowledge in glaucoma, and the ability to objectively articulate their views about an applicant’s research proposal. In addition to this the person would be carrying out the following duties:

  • Reviewing an applicant’s documentation to make sure it complies with the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research, 2007.
  • Deciding with other Committee members which areas of an application require further explanation or are unethical including the patient information and consent forms.
  • Writing up a summary of areas of a proposal that need further information provided, or are unethical.
  • Making a final recommendation to the committee whether a research proposal should proceed.
  • Maintaining paper and electronic files from email correspondence and application information.

Senior and Retired Fellows’ Group – Chair

RANZCO is currently seeking a new Chair of the Senior and Retired Fellows group.

The Senior and Retired Fellows group comprises of all RANZCO Fellows who are 65 years and older, regardless of their working status. The main roles would be to represent the group at Council and put forward speakers for the Senior Fellows lounge at Congress.

Training Assessments Committee – Members

Expressions of Interest are invited for the Training Assessments Committee – Members

The purpose of the Committee is to oversee the implementation and delivery of non-examination assessments and training requirements (e.g., work-based assessments, reflective activities, completion of required online modules) in the Vocational Training Program (VTP) Assessment Program.

Members of the Training Assessments Committee should be a Fellow of RANZCO (minimum of three years) or hold similar standing in a professional body akin to RANZCO and be recognized by RANZCO.
