Sustainability
Sustainability encompasses a range of environmental concerns including addressing pollution and environmental degradation, as well as preserving healthy water systems, biodiversity, agriculture and food systems.
These environmental concerns are exacerbated by climate change, identified by the World Health Organization as one of the greatest threats to global health in the 21st century, with its effects already observable in Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand and the Pacific islands region, impacting patients, communities, and healthcare delivery.
Given that climate change constitutes a major public health risk, it enables doctors to have a strong voice in this area. As eye health professionals, RANZCO Fellows and Trainees have a critical role in advocating for, and adopting, sustainable practices. Actions to reduce emissions and waste in ophthalmology not only protect the environment but deliver direct health and social benefits.
Position on environmental sustainability and future directions
RANZCO’s Sustainability Charter outlines how we support sustainable eye care and contribute to the realisation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Sustainability is a core pillar of RANZCO’s strategic roadmap (Vision 2030 and beyond /Te Kitenga Vision 2030) to improve eye health outcomes across Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand, and the Pacific island region and is cemented into the fabric of the College via the release of RANZCO’s environmental sustainability position statement (PDF).
RANZCO’s sustainability agenda continues to evolve. Our upcoming priorities include:
- Further integrating sustainability into education by embedding content into CPD, training curricula, and College events. See the Healthcare Sustainability and Resilience Module (2025) developed by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care.
- Advocating for system-wide change by continuing our collaboration with the government, industry, and other medical colleges to decarbonise health systems.
- Monitoring and reporting progress, including updating key policy documents.

Sustainable Practice Guides
The Sustainable Practice Guides (SPGs) are evidence-based, regularly reviewed, and aligned with best practice in sustainable healthcare:
Guidelines
- The RANZCO guidelines for managing infection risk in routine tonometry balance infection-control requirements with the realities of resource use, cost, waste and sustainability. They highlight the environmental and cost burdens of disposable options and heavy disinfection, and supports more moderate, risk-based approaches.
- The RANZCO guidelines for the prevention of Nosocomial Epidemic Keratoconjunctivitis (EKC) support sustainability by ensuring high resource infection control practices are used judiciously, and by emphasising early control to avoid heavier burdens later.
Green Tool Kit
The Green Tool Kit is a guideline that offers practical and affordable ideas to make eco-friendly organisational improvements. It includes checklists, case studies, and examples of achievable actions – from energy and waste reduction to sustainable procurement and community engagement.

Collaborative Partnerships
Climate Change and Health Multi-College Advisory Committee (MCAC)
The MCAC is a forum for engagement and collaboration for medical colleges on climate change, health policy and advocacy. The MCAC successfully worked to publicly promote the recommendations of the expert report, Climate Change and Australia's healthcare systems, which informed the Healthy Climate Future Campaign. This has been endorsed by 14 medical colleges, including RANZCO.
EyeSustain
RANZCO is a member of EyeSustain, a global coalition of ophthalmic organisations, societies, and their members who are committed to promoting the sustainability of eye care. See RANZCO member profile here: https://www.eyesustain.org/member-societies/ranzco
The International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) Climate Action Working Group
The IAPB Climate Action Working Group provides leadership and advocacy for increased adoption and action on priority matters relating to climate action in eye health. Documents endorsed by RANZCO include:
- The Guide for Environmentally Sustainable Practices in The Eye Health Sector
- The Call to Action for Environmentally Sustainable Practices in The Eye Health Sector
- Climate Action and Eye Care Myths: Busted which debunks five prevalent myths about climate action and eye care.
Health College Working Group on Climate Change
RANZCO is a member of the Health College Working Group on Climate Change, which facilitates the development of the Framework for Collaborative Action on Climate and Health. Enabling national coordination and implementation of actions from the National Health and Climate Strategy, the aim of the Framework is to:
- Develop low-emissions models of care, including actions to improve care, minimise wasteful health care and involve patients in decisions about appropriate care and;
- Mobilise and support the health workforce to lead the health system response to climate change.
Get involved
RANZCO encourages all members to engage with the College’s environmental initiatives, share their sustainability innovations, and participate in ongoing consultation.
Keep an eye out on the annual Sustainability Prize (see 2024 winner) and Sustainable Practices Exhibitor Award. Applications for the 2025 prizes have closed.
