“There’s a silent UV epidemic affecting children. Children are a particularly vulnerable group that need to be protected with properly protective sunglasses.”
RANZCO NSW Ophthalmologist/eye surgeon Dr Alina Zeldovich has commented on why use of certain sunglasses pose major consequences for eye health, particularly that of children’s eye health.
As 80 per cent of UV damage to the eyes happen in childhood, it is imperative that parents purchase sunglasses with adequate UV protection for their children.
For children and adults, wearing sunglasses for the design and trend, not for the UV protection, and also wearing dark-tinted sunglasses indoors can increase a person’s risk of experiencing symptoms such as eye fatigue and headaches, and increase their chances of developing harmful eye conditions.
