Pacific Eye Institute – Senior Teaching Ophthalmologist

The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ (FHFNZ) works for a world where no one is needlessly blind or vision impaired. In partnership with the Pacific Eye Institute (PEI) in Suva, Fiji, we are seeking a committed and passionate Senior Teaching Ophthalmologist to join our team.
About the Role
This is a senior faculty position at PEI, requiring a highly experienced ophthalmologist who will play a critical leadership role in shaping the next generation of eye health professionals in the Pacific. Reporting to the Chief Consultant Ophthalmologist, you will:
- Teach, supervise, and mentor postgraduate ophthalmology trainees (DO, PGDEC, MMed) through lectures, clinical practice, surgical mentoring, and outreach.
- Deliver high-quality teaching while strengthening and enhancing existing training programs and clinical processes.
- Use PEI/CWMH Eye Clinic services including the Operating Theatre, Outpatient Department, Diabetes Eye Clinic, and Mobile Eye Clinic as platforms for practical training.
- Support skills transfer to faculty members in Glaucoma, Medical Retina, PHACO surgery, and Research.
- Foster a strong research culture by mentoring students in academic projects and supporting faculty research.
- Collaborate with Fiji National University and visiting sub-specialists to ensure alignment with international standards while contextualizing training for the Pacific.
- Bring senior-level expertise and thought leadership to review, streamline, and strengthen internal clinical, training, and operational processes, contributing to continuous improvement and innovation across the institute.
- Act as a role model and senior educator, uplifting teaching standards and building faculty capability.
What We’re Looking For
We are seeking a highly motivated ophthalmologist with:
- Medical qualifications eligible for registration with the Fiji Medical Council.
- Significant experience in teaching, mentoring, and capacity building (preferably in a senior or faculty role).
- Experience working in developing world or resource-limited settings.
- Strong clinical and surgical skills.
- Competency in small incision cataract surgery (SICS) is compulsory and Phacoemulsification cataract surgery- added advantage
- Demonstrated ability to lead improvements, introduce best practices, and strengthen systems and processes.
- Commitment to advancing ophthalmology training, research, and clinical excellence in the Pacific.

CPD Committee – NZ Members
RANZCO is seeking Expressions of Interests from Fellows based in New Zealand to join the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Committee.
The CPD Committee plays a vital role in advising and supporting the College by providing strategic input and expert guidance on the development, implementation and continuous improvement of the RANZCO CPD program.
This is a valuable opportunity for Fellows to contribute their expertise, represent the perspectives of their peers, and actively shape the future direction of CPD within the College.
Committee members will be appointed for an initial term of three years, with the possibility of renewal for up to three additional one-year terms.

Ophthalmic Sciences Examiners Committee – Subject Leader (Optics)
Expressions of Interest are invited for the position of Ophthalmic Sciences – Subject Leader (Optics).
The Ophthalmic Sciences Subject Leader (Optics) is overseen by and responsible to, the Chair of the Ophthalmic Sciences Examiners and COPEM Assessors Committee and provides leadership to Examiners and Assessors in the Optics subject area.
The initial term of appointment is three (3) years, following which re-appointment will be on an annual basis. The Subject Leader is appointed for a maximum term of nine (9) years.
Current Optics Examiners and those who have retired from the committee within the last five years, are invited to express their interest in appointment as the Subject Leader for Optics.
- The Ophthalmic Sciences examinations (Anatomy, Physiology & Optics) are run once each year as Multiple-Choice examinations (MCQ) held online and marked automatically – there is no marking commitment required.
- Each examiner is asked to create approx. 30 new MCQ questions annually with full training provided on how to structure MCQ questions. A new copy of all relevant textbooks will be made available to new examiners to aid the process of question writing.
All members of the Examining Committee can claim a maximum of 25 hours per year CPD.
Fellows are invited to express their interest in this role by submitting a copy of their curriculum vitae and providing other relevant information (such as their subspecialty or area of interest, hospital appointments, their involvement in education and training).

Progression Committee – Members
RANZCO is recruiting members for the Progression Committee
The purpose of the Committee is to:
- Review trainee readiness to progress to the next stage of the Vocational Training Program (VTP)
- Review individual trainees who are facing challenges with progression
- Provide expert advice and support to the Censor-in-Chief (CiC);
- Engage with RANZCO committees and staff to support the design and delivery of the VTP
In order to be eligible, RANZCO Fellows must be at least 5 years post VTP training.
The time commitment will vary but will involve after-hours meetings, as and when required.

Training Assessments Committee – Members
The purpose of the Committee is to oversee the implementation and delivery of non-examination assessments and training requirements (e.g., work-based assessments, reflective activities, completion of required online modules) in the Vocational Training Program (VTP) Assessment Program.
Members of the Training Assessments Committee should be a Fellow of RANZCO (minimum of three years) or hold similar standing in a professional body akin to RANZCO and be recognized by RANZCO.

Therapeutics Committee – NZ Members
Calls for expressions of interest for two New Zealand-based members to join the Therapeutics Committee are now open! We strongly encourage Fellows who subspecialise in paediatrics, glaucoma and uveitis to apply.
Committee members remain in the position for a term of 3 years, with the option of three additional one-year terms. Committee members are expected to meet as required and, in any event, once per year, in-person, at the annual scientific conference.
The Committee is primarily tasked with:
- Providing advice on drugs and other therapeutic substances used by ophthalmologists in clinical practice;
- Providing advice and direction to the Board on emerging therapeutic issues;
- Providing input into clinical guidelines, position statements and RANZCO responses to submissions and inquiries that relate to therapeutic substances.

Public Health Committee – NZ Members
Calls for Expressions of Interest for 2 New Zealand based members to join RANZCO’s Public Health Committee are now open. We strongly encourage Fellows with a background or interest in public health to apply.
- Guide and oversee the development and implementation of actions in relation to preventative health, primary prevention, early intervention as per Vision 2030 and beyond Plan
- Develop, provide advice and input into RANZCO policy positions and advocacy related to:
-
- community education
- healthy lifestyles and behaviour
- early interventions
- prevention of eye disorders
- low vision and rehabilitation
- Identify and discuss emerging public health issues impacting eye health and provide advice to the Board on appropriate responses
- Provide input into the policy development processes of governments and advocacy conducted through peak bodies in the eye health sector (e.g. Vision 2020 Australia’s Prevention and Early Intervention Committee, and Low Vision and Rehabilitation Committee).
The Committee members would be available to attend an annual meeting at the RANZCO congress (November 2026). In addition, attendance at Zoom meetings through the year as required, contributions to regular email and online platform discussions.
