On 3 October 2022, RANZCO CEO Mark Carmichael attended the official opening of the Lions Outback Vision Kimberley Eye Hub in Broome, Western Australia.
Delivering permanent specialised eye health services in the remote, regional and vulnerable Aboriginal communities across the North West in Broome, the Hub also provides outreach to 20 communities and five regional towns across the Kimberley. This is significant in the provision of greater equity of eye health services and transforming patient care for these communities, who would otherwise have lacked access to these vital services and support. The Hub will also provide resources into prevention and education activities.
Established by RANZCO Fellow and ophthalmologist A/Prof Angus Turner in 2010, the Lions Outback Vision team, a fully owned subsidiary of the Lions Eye Institute, works throughout the North West regions.
RANZCO President Prof Nitin Verma AM commented on the work of A/Prof A/Taylor and the Lions Outback Vision team: “I had the pleasure of visiting Angus in May last year (2021). It is amazing to see the progress he has made in such a short amount of time. The service brings the concept of equity of access to life – creating a hub for a population dispersed over our vast and sunburnt country,”.
