RANZCO is proud to launch the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Models of Collaborative Care report.
Developed in partnership with the First Nations Eye Health Alliance (FNEHA), this report captures the outcomes of a landmark workshop held on Gadigal Country in September 2025, bringing together leaders from across the eye care and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health sectors to reimagine collaborative care in ophthalmology. Supported by an educational grant from Roche and Bayer, the workshop was attended by fourteen participants representing different craft groups, communities and organisations.
The message was clear: strengthening eye health outcomes requires structural reform – embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices in RANZCO’s decision-making, redeveloping our definition of collaborative care to reflect First Nations models of holistic, community-led care, and adopting First Nations research methodologies that uphold data sovereignty and align with community priorities.
These priorities will shape RANZCO’s next steps as we work to align with the National Agreement on Closing the Gap and build a culturally safe, accountable and sustainable eye health system.
We thank FNEHA, the workshop facilitators and participants for their leadership and guidance. This report marks an important milestone in RANZCO’s ongoing commitment to genuine partnership, shared governance and improved vision outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
